11 Classic Poolside Sound Tracks with David Bay

David Bay, Hamburg-born creative powerhouse, creates music that blends analog and digital, retro and modern, funky and laid-back. We sat down with David to discuss his favourite poolside selections, in celebration of our upcoming eleventh volume of Poolside Sounds, out on Future Disco this Friday.

From the shimmering beats of Yuksek and Confidence Man, to anthems from ANOTR to see you into a Poolside siesta, David Bay walks us through eleven of his top poolside anthems.

1. Lazywax – Santa Catarina
When I first heard the track somewhere on YouTube it had only a few hundred streams and I was blown away. How can something so good be heard so little. Now, some years later it’s been streamed 6,5 million times (only on Spotify) and is only the first of many great, great tracks by the Australian producer-duo of Tim Ayre and KESMAR. They’ve remixed heaps of big records and I wish they’d be releasing way more music because to me, this is some of the very best stuff we have in Disco these days!

2. Folamour – Alive
I could basically put almost any song by Folamour in a Poolside Top Ten, but I thought this is a great choice because it also has this cute indie flavour to it. I really like when artists evolve and their music is more a process than a sound that won’t change. When I first heard this record I was surprised to hear Folamour sing and I have to say I find it really charming. Such smooth vocals and real instruments like strings, electric pianos,… Clubby and chill at the same time.

3. ANOTR – Amplia
ANOTR made one of last years strongest records with “Relax My Eyes“ – that’s for sure. But the rest of their album “The Reset” also really is worth listening to. It all has this super playful and organic appeal and sometimes almost feels a bit jammy. When warming up at a club, this tune „Amalia“ always is a great floor-filler. It’s super laid back and still bringing a certain mystique and energy that gravitates towards the crowd. I don’t know how they do it!

4. Speckman – Desparate Housevibez
Speckman is a Hamburg-based up and coming DJ and producer that released an EP on my label Zissou Records back in 2022. The track “Desparate Housevibez” does not only have a very fun title, it also is a very well crafted and arranged piece of electronic sample-house-music. Speckman also released through Public Possession and Golden Pudel Produkte and I have a strong feeling that he’s going to make a bunch of more great releases soonish.

5. Snacks – Martinee
This track is my personal favourite from the Future Disco catalogue. Snacks made a lots of great records and I always liked that combination of funkiness and sample-feel. The intro is slowly building and from just a chord we move into a beautiful progression with a sleek bassline and vocals that almost sound like a brass section. They told me that bass was programmed and I still can’t believe it – it seems so realistic!!! “Martinee” is a strong title for poolside music, isn’t it?

6. Blimp  -After All This Time, Always

Having being part of the exciting eleventh volume of “Poolside Sounds”, I have to mention the track “After All This Time,  Always” by Blimp. The smooth piano elements, and cool vocals are almost a cool down track to “heatwave”. I can’t wait to listen to these together by the poolside this summer.

6. Yuksek & Confidence Man – Gorgeous (Mighty Mouse Remix)
I’ve first seen Yuksek perform at Melt! Festival in 2009, I think. Back then his sound was a lot harder, I mean it was the days of Justice, Boys Noize, … Over the past couple of years the tracks of the French music producer mastermind have become a bit smoother. Especially this song featuring the Australian indie-duo Confidence Man, remixed by Mighty Mouse has an outstanding energy. I love the alternating vocals, swingy drums and massive bassline.

7. Falcon Punch – Never Enough
This production is a very timeless and slow sample-disco gem that I discovered through THE classic YouTube channel majestic casual. I really enjoy the combination of lo-fi-elements, 80s-sounds and those beautifully sad vocals. Sounds so effortless but this track is so well done!

8. Delegation – You And I
This is my favourite disco track of all time. Everything about this song is pure magic to me, no more words needed here.

9. kryptogram – Look How Far We’ve Come
That’s a new one, just came out in May and I think it’s another great proof of how good kryptogram actually is. Such a laid back arrangement and feel with such high speed. The instrumental is a solid and steady groover, but the vocal melodies and that LFO-synth-lead really take this song to another level.

10. david bay & Digitalism – heatwave
Not trying to brag here, but I just made a song with two of my heroes, Digitalism. Pinch me, please!!! The track’s called „heatwave“ and came out on Future Disco on the 7th of June. Really proud of this and would of course appreciate if you took a minute and listened to this. Thank you for your attention and now off to the poolside!
