In Conversation With: Prins Thomas

Prins Thomas, one of Norway’s most celebrated musical exports, has championed a new path for dance, disco and beyond. Ahead of his show at Ministry of Sound on the 8th June, with System Olympia, Alan Dixon and more, we spoke about his signature influences, advice and mishaps in his vast career.

From Hip Hop Beginnings to Disco Stardom

Thomas began his DJ journey at the tender age of nine in 1984, drawn to the vibrant hip-hop culture and the era’s pop music, especially the extended 12” mixes. He recalls, “I also played instruments like clarinet, bass, and cello, quickly realizing the path I wanted to take.” His early foray into music laid a solid foundation for a career that would see him become a key figure in the global dance scene.
A Passionate Pursuit of Music. For Thomas, the choice to pursue music was clear from the start. “There weren’t many options, really. This is what I wanted to do from a young age. It was either this or a career in skateboarding,” he reflects. This unwavering focus has driven him to explore and blend various musical genres, creating a unique sound that defies easy categorization.

The Signature Prins Thomas Sound

When asked to describe his signature style, Thomas finds it challenging to pin down. “There’s a fair bit of older music from the 70s or 80s, but I’m not really thinking of it as nostalgia. I look in all directions for inspiration and I think that shines through, mixing up fresh and forward-thinking stuff with nuggets from the past, trying to keep it entertaining.” His eclectic taste ensures that his sets are a dynamic mix of the familiar and the unexpected.

Anticipation for the Future Disco Dance Club

As he prepares for his set at the Future Disco Dance Club, attendees can expect nothing short of an exhilarating experience. “I’ll do my best in giving you all a real good time through the power of four to the floor and hopefully all wanting more,” he promises. His ability to craft an engaging and memorable dance floor experience is well-documented and eagerly anticipated by fans.

Current Musical Favorites and Preparation Rituals

Thomas is always on the lookout for new and exciting tracks. “From the top of my head: there’s a great new Sascha Funke coming out on Running Back, an amazing Alex Kassian version of Manuel Goettsching’s E2/E4 with mind-blowing versions by Mad Professor, and a bunch of semi-secret deep digs to keep it exciting,” he shares. Interestingly, his preparation for performances is minimalistic and instinctual. “I try to be there a little bit before my time, soak up the atmosphere, and make my mind up (last minute) what my first and second track should be.”

Communicating Through Music

For Thomas, the ultimate goal of his music is to provide an unforgettable experience for his audience. “The goal is always to give the dancers an unforgettable time, hopefully by playing the exact music I want to hear,” he explains. His sets are a reflection of his personal taste and passion, creating a genuine connection with his listeners.

Memorable Career Moments

Thomas’s career has been filled with notable experiences, some more challenging than others. He recalls one particularly trying event: “I once DJ’d with one working CDJ at a big festival in Istanbul, after spending the first 30 minutes of my slot without a mixer to play through. Memorable, but not in a good way.” Such experiences have undoubtedly shaped his resilience and adaptability as an artist.
Advice for Aspiring DJs.

To aspiring DJs, Thomas offers straightforward advice: “Play the music you like and feel passionate about, don’t just go with the flow. And don’t take advice from people much older than you!” His emphasis on authenticity and passion highlights the importance of staying true to one’s artistic vision.

Staying Inspired in a Dynamic Industry

In an ever-evolving music landscape, Thomas stays creative and inspired by constantly exploring new music and engaging with diverse sources of inspiration. “I try to keep my ears open and constantly check out new music (and whatever old music I haven’t heard before). I spend time with interesting people, have conversations, read books, watch movies, and go for walks or bike rides,” he says.

Looking Ahead

While Thomas remains tight-lipped about his upcoming projects and collaborations, he hints that exciting things are on the horizon. “Yes, but they’re all secret for the moment,” he teases, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what’s next.

Dream Collaborations

When asked about his dream collaboration, Thomas cryptically mentions, “Well, one is one of the unnamed collabs above…” This hint at future partnerships only adds to the anticipation surrounding his work.
