We had the fortunate opportunity to sit down with Mauro, better known by his stage name Musumeci, just before his upcoming set at the Dance Club. In our conversation with the talented Sicilian DJ and producer, we delved into his journey, inspirations, and what fans can expect from his eagerly anticipated performance at our 15th Anniversary Future Disco Celebration on June 8th.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey into the world of DJing?
A: I started DJing at a very young age, my first experiences was playing at my friends’ birthdays. It wasn’t an easy task; while they were seeking fun, for me, it was more of a social experiment, akin to seeing how long they would resist by listening to tracks they weren’t familiar with. They were patient with me, and I believe they were truly great friends. Today, after over 35 years of DJing, I can confidently say that it is everything my life is about.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in music, specifically as a DJ?
A: At a certain point I discovered music was my way of communicating. I understood that through music I could express what I feel much better than in any other way. To DJ and to write music became soon a necessity. It’s simply something I can’t do without.
Q: How would you describe your signature sound or style?
I consider my signature to be the personal synthesis of sound that I attempt to achieve, blending elements of the present, past, and future in order to represent my vision of life, centered around fully experiencing the eternal present moment. My music composition follows a very classical and “traditional” approach, with sound design kept to a minimum and primarily “invisible.” I’m not particularly fond of hype in sound; instead, I prefer focusing on small details and simplicity.
Q: You’re about to play for Future Disco Dance Club. What can attendees expect from your set?
A: Every night is a unique experience, shaped by various unpredictable factors. The alchemy between people, the venue, and the music is almost magical and extremely difficult to plan; it simply happens or it doesn’t. We’re coming together to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Future Disco, and we’ll bring a lot of enthusiasm, excitement, and great music to a legendary venue like Ministry Of Sound. I believe the conditions are set for an epic event! Personally, I’ll do my best to go with the flow and immerse myself in the party atmosphere!
Q: How do you prepare for a performance like this? Any rituals or routines?
A: I dig as deeply as I can into my music collection, and of course, I listen to tons of new music, trying to find something special that can spark the night or create a particular moment of intense emotion, leaving people with positive feelings.
Q: As a DJ, what do you hope to communicate or evoke through your music?
A: I believe music is a higher level of communication, a universal language capable of expressing all the shades of human feelings. My goal as a DJ is to experience together with all the people in the room a a journey through our emotions.
Q:Can you share any memorable experiences or highlights from your career so far?
A: The moment my parents wanted to attend one of my gigs for the first time. Back then, I didn’t see it from the right perspective, but now I understand that it was their way of blessing me for pursuing something I chose to do against their will.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring DJs looking to make it in the industry?
A: Don’t try to make it, try to be happy with what you do. Try to be yourself and stay true to the music. To spread emotions through music is what DJ’s are for, the rest is marketing and comes later.
Q:How do you stay creative and inspired in an ever-evolving music landscape?
A: I love music, any music. I simply strive to remain free from prejudice and stay curious.
Q: Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations we should keep an eye out for from you?
A:Absolutely! I’m about to launch a new label with my mate Phunkadelica. The name of the label is Somethingnu, and as the name suggests, it’s going to be about exploring different aspects of our musical personalities. Stay tuned!
Q: Finally, if you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
A: Stevie Wonder, because is Stevie Wonder.
